As homeless animals flood city shelters, PETA is teaming up with iconic Los Angeles–area vegan restaurant chain Monty’s Good Burger for a citywide billboard blitz featuring the restaurant’s namesake and mascot, Monty the rescued dog, reminding Angelenos to always adopt animal companions from shelters and never buy them from pet shops or breeders.

To celebrate the new campaign, PETA and Monty’s Good Burger in Culver City (part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area) hosted a billboard unveiling and adoption event that included free pup shakes for dogs and vegan soft serve for humans in attendance. The event was attended by notable locals, including Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin.

PETA urges anyone looking to add a dog (or cat) to their family to find their own “superstar” at a local animal shelter. In Los Angeles, the flood of homeless animals has reached such epic proportions that the city council recently took the unprecedented step of ending the issuance of dog-breeding permits when shelters are at 75% capacity or over.

And it’s not just Los Angeles: In the U.S., around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless at any given time. The solution is prevention through spaying and neutering and, of course, adopting—and never buying—dogs and cats.

How You Can Help: Take Action for Homeless Animals in Los Angeles

In addition to adopting your next animal companion from a shelter, you can help countless animals by joining PETA in calling on Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to do her job and remind shelters of theirs: to provide shelter to all animals in need.
