It’s not often you see an Ivy Leaguer stepping outside their hallowed halls for much of anything, but PETA has uncovered evidence that an animal experimenter from Harvard Medical School has reportedly been jetting to South Carolina to conduct cruel and pointless tests on monkeys at Alpha Genesis, Inc.—the cesspool from which 43 macaques escaped in November.
Dan Barouch, a Harvard experimenter, has been conducting infectious disease experiments on the taxpayer’s dime in a place where documents show monkeys have suffocated and frozen to death. Where they’ve been fed moldy food, or none at all. Where their tails, tongues and fingers have allegedly been severed thanks to sheer incompetence. Where they’ve reportedly been found suffering with multiple parasitic infections.
So, in a letter to Harvard Medical School’s dean, PETA shares what PETA has uncovered and points out that the results of any experiments at Alpha Genesis are very likely compromised by the conditions at the facility—including the reported prevalence of disease already present. Â
Of course, Harvard is no stranger to unethical behavior, as evidenced by Margaret Livingstone’s horrific experiments involving sensory deprivation inflicted on infant monkeys removed permanently from their mothers.
Profiteers of Pain
Alpha Genesis imports, breeds, and sells animals for experiments and conducts cruel and deadly testing for others. The company, over the years, has stacked up plenty of violations of animal welfare laws from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
A whistleblower recently provided PETA with documents and photos detailing grotesque staff incompetence leading to the suffering and death of numerous monkeys there. It became the basis for our 270-page complaint to federal officials.
That report follows previous whistleblower reports we obtained that 22 endangered monkeys slowly roasted to death at the facility after a diesel heater malfunctioned.
PETA is asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, which funds Alpha Genesis with $19 million in contracts, to investigate the apparent violations of federal animal welfare laws.
What You Can Do
Please urge the National Institutes of Health to send the 43 monkeys who escaped from Alpha Genesis to a reputable sanctuary. Anonymous donors already have committed $250,000 for their long-term care.
