Since just days after the war in Ukraine started in February 2022, PETA Germany and its partners have been risking it all to save animals in need. From flooding to missile strikes, Global Compassion Fund–backed teams have risked it all to help Ukraine’s animals. Meet some of the beautiful souls who now have a second chance at life because of your support.
When a village in Ukraine came under massive shelling, Iholochka’s home burned down while the lone dog hid in the basement. Alone and traumatized, she sat on the ruins of her home day after day, waiting for help.
Amid ongoing attacks, a local woman traversed the war-torn village to feed Iholochka every day. She contacted the PETA-supported Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK) for help with saving Iholochka and another dog, Druzhok—and the team jumped into action.
When the rescuers arrived at the site of Iholochka’s destroyed home, she was nowhere to be found—but right as they were about to leave, she ran up to them and led them to the basement. At that moment, another attack began.
While the village was still under fire, the ARK team quickly took Iholochka and fled. They were forced to leave Druzhok behind because they couldn’t find the frightened dog—but his guardian, who had already left for Kharkiv, came back for him. With the help of compassionate volunteers, Druzhok and his guardian made it to the ARK clinic in Kharkiv. Now, Iholochka and Druzhok are recovering in ARK’s care, and the PETA-supported rescue team is looking for homes for them.
