Hosted at Bristol’s wonderful science museum We The Curious, the conference featured a powerful line-up of expert speakers, hands-on workshops and unique networking opportunities. Our third conference built on the successes of previous years to inspire and empower the next generation of scientists. From keynote speeches by trailblazing researchers to panels on diverse STEM career paths, the conference showcased impactful ways for students to shape the future of animal-free science.

Our speakers this year included Dr. Carol Treasure, who shared the impactful work of XCellR8, Dr. Lindsay Marshall, who highlighted advancements in animal-free cystic fibrosis research, Professor Geoff Pilkington, who detailed his pioneering career in animal-free brain tumour research, and Professor Amanda Ellison who discussed her innovative use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. The presentations concluded with an engaging panel discussion moderated by scientific consultant Rebecca Ram.

After lunch, Rebecca Ram led a workshop with students, diving deeper into non-animal research methods. Nick Jukes of InterNICHE hosted an interactive session where students practised essential surgical skills on non-animal models, building confidence and competence without the use of animals. Our Education Officer, Natasha Bailey, ran a hands-on workshop focused on the processes of safety testing, providing students with practical insight. Lastly, Mark White, our Head of Education, led a session encouraging students to critically discuss the ethical considerations surrounding animal experimentation.
