  • Improved Livestock Health: With fewer ASF cases, the overall health and productivity of hogs are expected to improve, leading to better yields and profitability for farmers.
  • Market Stability: ASF-free zones help stabilize the market, reducing price volatility and ensuring a steady supply of pork products.
  • Enhanced Biosecurity: Continued emphasis on biosecurity measures will prevent future outbreaks and protect the gains made in ASF control.

Continued Vigilance and Biosecurity

Despite the positive developments, it is crucial for hog raisers to maintain strong biosecurity measures. Here are some essential tips:

  1. Strict Farm Management:
    • Limit access to your farm to essential personnel only.
    • Use disinfectant footbaths and provide clean clothing and boots for visitors.
  2. Isolation and Quarantine:
    • Quarantine new pigs for at least 30 days and monitor them for ASF signs before integrating them into the herd.
    • Isolate any sick animals immediately to prevent the spread of disease.
  3. Sanitation Practices:
    • Regularly clean and disinfect pig pens, equipment, and vehicles.
    • Dispose of carcasses, waste, and bedding materials safely.

    • Install robust fencing to prevent wild boars from entering the farm.
    • Implement measures to control rodents and insects that could spread the virus.

Beware of False ASF Reports

As the industry progresses towards ASF-free status, it is essential to remain vigilant against false ASF reports intended to scare hog raisers and the public. Such misinformation can cause unnecessary panic and disrupt the market. Always verify information from reliable sources and report any suspected cases of ASF to local veterinary authorities.

Conclusion

The recent upgrades in ASF zones in NIR- Negros and Siquijor, and Cebu along with nationwide improvements, mark a positive development for the Philippine hog industry. By continuing to apply stringent biosecurity measures and staying informed, hog raisers can protect their herds and contribute to the industry’s sustained recovery and growth.
