PETA’s not-so-motley crew of celebrity supporters just gained a show-stopping guitarist—and he wants everyone to tune in for an important message: Adoption is the only option!

A Hair Metal Rocker and His Hairless Companion

In a public service announcement for PETA, John 5 cuddles up with his companion dog, Churro, showing off a softer side than fans of the heavy metal rocker are used to. John adopted Churro—an otherwise hairless dog with a natural mohawk—from an animal shelter that had found him abandoned in a box in the San Bernardino desert. Together, John 5 and his spiky-haired canine companion look like a Rolling Stone front page cover.

Don’t Let Those Breeders Get You

Mötley Crüe’s newest member knows a thing or two about good licks—and according to him, the best ones come from adopted dogs. There’s no excuse for buying animals from breeders, who continue to churn out puppies and kittens amid a widespread animal-overpopulation and homelessness crisis.

Churro’s story highlights that virtually any breed of dog can be found in a shelter or through a rescue group. With around 70 million homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. at any given time, animal shelters across the country have been overrun for years. Some shelters with misguided policies are warehousing dogs for months or even years and turning animals away, leaving the most vulnerable ones with nowhere to go—and leaving them to reproduce makes the companion animal overpopulation crisis that much worse. That’s why PETA urges shelters to accept all animals in need, advises guardians to have their animal companions spayed or neutered, and asks everyone to adopt and not shop.

When you adopt, it will enrich your life so much. Treat these animals how you want to be treated. Show them love, because all animals have feelings—and when you show them love, they’ll show love to you.”

—John 5
