A shocking new exposé by Animal Justice reveals fish being brutally killed at Sustainable Blue, a “sustainable” salmon farm in Canada. The disturbing video shows multiple fish being stomped on. One clip shows a supervisor killing several fish—one who is pregnant—by slamming them against tanks.
When asked whether workers received any slaughter training, the supervisor stated that there was no training and no protocol, adding, “I smoke them on the side of the tank; then I will sometimes stomp on their heads.”
Sustainable Blue markets itself as a “responsible” and “sustainable” fishing operation. They also claim their staff works to “ensure fish are healthy and happy 24/7.” In response to the footage, Animal Justice filed a legal complaint with animal welfare authorities.
Operations like Sustainable Blue confine thousands of fish in crowded, unnatural conditions, leading to widespread suffering and neglect. Scientific studies have found that fish have highly developed senses and mental abilities. In fact, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council—a leading organization overseeing farmed aquatic animals—acknowledges that fish feel “pain, stress, and anxiety.” Tragically, many fish caught in the wild or raised in fish farms experience torturous deaths. Despite this, fish have few to no legal protections.
Fish farms are horrific for the animals forced to live in them. A Mercy For Animals investigation into a U.S. fish farm reveals thousands of fish raised in stressful, overcrowded pens with poor water quality. Our footage shows factory-farmed fish cut in half, shocked with electricity, and left to suffocate.
Cramped living conditions for fish in intensive farming systems and the release of pollutants into surrounding waters all contribute to contamination and disease transmission, making this an unsustainable and unethical practice. Fish deserve better!
The fishing industry has caused significant environmental devastation through overfishing and habitat destruction. Ethical concerns over fish welfare and unsustainable practices persist, and we have the power to make a change. Choosing plant-based foods can help preserve the delicate balance of aquatic life.
