Would you eat owl wings? In PETA’s new prank video, musician and satirist Oli Frost hands out free “wings” to passers-by. Watch now to see how these Londoners react when they’re told whose “flesh” they’re eating.
They were horrified to learn the “wings” were from owls.
What’s the Difference?
You guessed it – there isn’t one. Chickens are smart, social, curious birds who don’t want to be carved up and eaten any more than an owl – or human – would. The Londoners’ horrified reaction to the thought of eating owls rather than chickens is fuelled by speciesism, the misguided belief that some sentient beings are inferior to others. Anyone horrified at the thought of eating owls’ wings needs to extend that compassion to all animals and go vegan.
The Violent Meat Industry
Chickens raised for their flesh are among the most abused animals in the cruel meat industry. On today’s farms, they’re routinely fed antibiotics and bred to grow unnaturally large over a short period of time. They can reach such an extreme size that their legs often collapse under their own bodyweight. The birds can also develop foot rot from their bedding never being changed and may suffer from heat stress, breast blisters, and dermatitis as a result of severe crowding.
Chickens Scalded in Tanks
After enduring a lifetime of misery, chickens are roughly shoved into crates and taken to an abattoir. There, workers shackle them upside down, slit their throats, and put them into scalding defeathering tanks. Due to ineffective stunning methods, chickens may regain consciousness during this excruciating process.
