The third installment in our Dynasty of Cruelty Top Villain series has arrived: Sue Hudson, Director of Deceit at Burnbrae Farms. Sue joins the ranks of our collectable villain cards that reveal the unsettling truth about the Hudson family, which owns Burnbrae Farms. Burnbrae is Canada’s largest egg supplier, and continues to confine countless hens in brutal cages for eggs.

These cards are appearing in select egg cartons across Canada, with a new Hudson villain revealed each week during the campaign, unless Burnbrae commits to going 100 percent cage-free.

The Hudson family dynasty thrives off the backs of suffering animals, and Sue Hudson plays a pivotal role in perpetuating the illusion that Burnbrae Farms prioritizes animal welfare, through their deceptive marketing and communications. Meanwhile, hens remain confined in cramped, filthy cages where they endure immense suffering.

Shocking Conditions Revealed in “Enriched” Cages

In April, Animal Justice released Canada’s largest-ever egg industry investigation, featuring undercover footage from dozens of egg farms across British Columbia and Quebec. The investigation revealed harrowing conditions on farms where hens are forced to live in cramped, filthy spaces—both in conventional and “enriched” battery cages.

Ammonia-filled air burns their skin and eyes, causing illness and injury. Many hens are featherless, weak, and visibly defeated—with some forced to live next to or on top of the rotting bodies of deceased cage mates.

Despite the idyllic conditions depicted on Burnbrae’s packaging—images of green pastures and vague-feel good labels like “Nestlaid”, “Naturegg”, and “enriched colony housing”—the truth is that the vast majority of Burnbrae’s hens are still trapped in miserable cages where they can suffer for years.

Hens & Canadians Deserve Better

Surveys show that Canadians are being tricked by Burnbrae’s packaging, with many consumers falsely believing their eggs are cage-free.

The gig is up for Burnbrae—we’re peeling the curtain back on how hens are really treated on their farms, and Canadians are starting to understand the truth of these horrifying conditions. It’s time for Burnbrae to commit to going 100 percent cage-free!
