Two women, Svitlana and her neighbor, live in a nearly deserted village near the front lines in Ukraine. In addition to keeping themselves safe during the constant shelling, Svitlana and her friend care for animals in the war zone and secure their evacuation with help from Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s PETA-supported team.

When two dogs, Druzhok and Lyutik, appeared, the women fed them, comforted them, and protected them from the bombs in nearby basements. Druzhok is only 3 years old, but his muzzle is already graying, likely from the stress of living in a war zone.

Thankfully, Animal Rescue Kharkiv was able to help evacuate the dogs, and they’re both resting and recuperating at its shelter.
