PETA Delivers a Truckload of Aid to Hurricane Helene Victims

When disaster strikes, animals, just like their human companions, can lose everything in the blink of an eye.

That’s what happened in parts of western North Carolina when Hurricane Helene unleashed flooding that destroyed homes, roads, and other infrastructure.

Residents and their animal companions are still relying on aid for everyday essentials. Now that road access has been somewhat restored, PETA’s Community Animal Project traveled there to replenish supplies for animals in need.

PETA Brought Aid to Avery and Madison Counties

On October 19, we delivered a truckload of essential supplies to Avery and Madison counties in North Carolina, where local animal shelters were still short on supplies weeks after Helene hit.

The donations we delivered included cat litter, cat food, dog food, and flea medication as well as other supplies vital to caring for companion animals.

We also dropped off several PETA doghouses for animal shelters to distribute for animals whose homes were completely destroyed and those who never had proper shelter.

Whatever you do, never leave animal companions behind in an evacuation. Not only is it terrifying for them, it’s also often deadly. PETA’s rescue teams have found animals up to their necks in water and trapped inside flooded homes with no escape.
