A senior dog named Moogan, despite being blind, has earned the title of “hero” for saving a volunteer at Utah’s Best Friends Animal Sanctuary from a potentially hazardous rattlesnake encounter.

Dan Fishbein, the volunteer, was guiding Moogan along a sandy trail when the incredible event unfolded.

Although Moogan relies on Fishbein to help him navigate obstacles, his instincts were razor-sharp that day.

As Fishbein described, Moogan was curious and busy exploring his surroundings, even without sight. “I’m always on the lookout to make sure he doesn’t barrel into anything,” Fishbein shared.

But as Fishbein walked unknowingly toward a coiled rattlesnake, Moogan suddenly shifted, drawing Fishbein’s focus just in time. “Moogan turned to the right, so I looked down, and there it was,” Fishbein said.

Thanks to Moogan’s quick response, Fishbein avoided what could have been a serious incident.

Rattlesnakes are common in Utah, and while their bites can be dangerous, fatalities are rare with prompt medical treatment.

Moogan’s alertness and protective nature earned him well-deserved praise, treats, and affection from everyone at the sanctuary.

Although Moogan’s once-active days have slowed since he lost his vision, he still loves playing and going on walks.

His caregiver, Ben O’Riordan-Tingley, remarked, “He’s got this instinct for fun—loves his toys, loves people. And now, it seems, he’s got a bit of a nose for danger, too.”
